In this tab, we will post your contributions to the discussion on the topic “Where Materials Engineering in Poland is going”. We encourage you to express your opinions via email to the PTM Secretary General:: j.wojewoda@imim.pl

Good morning,

I took the liberty of speaking up on this issue, although I am not an employee of the university, so my perspective is not on the problem of recruiting students for such studies. As a PAN employee, I look at the problem from the side of research and potential cooperation with industry.

Unfortunately, my experience with materials and work on increasing their strength do not necessarily find interest in the industry, because "it's not in the interest of the equipment not to require repairs, or replacing components with new ones." Moreover, the requirements for durability of equipment, components, for example, the required number of cycles of trouble-free operation only to meet the necessary condition of warranty. This I heard twice recently from people working at two different companies. So there is a widening gap between the interest in science (better, more durable materials) and industry (lowest possible cost, trouble-free operation only during the warranty period).

It was mentioned at the Seminar that the average designer knows about 50 materials. This is a very optimistic view. The constructors I know, use only a few materials and do not need more. I have even encountered the opinion that only the design is important, what what the components are made of is of the least importance, as long as it is cheap.

The opportunity is in new materials for new applications. For academics researchers, this means a constant change of research topics along with staying up to date up-to-date on current trends in industry or world politics. world politics.
