The initiative to establish PTM (Wisła, September 1995) and the First General Assembly of Founding Members (Katowice, December 1995)
At the initiative of Professors Leopold Jeziorski – Dean of the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the Częstochowa University of Technology, Adolf Maciejny – Head of the Department of Materials Science at the Silesian University of Technology, and Jerzy W. Wyrzykowski – Dean of the Faculty of Materials Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology, a scientific seminar entitled “Criteria and Conditions for Shaping Research Topics and Educational Directions in the Field of Materials Science” was held on September 6–8, 1995.
The seminar was attended by 60 participants representing institutes, departments, and divisions involved in materials science, materials engineering, and materials research from the following universities: AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Częstochowa University of Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology, Cracow University of Technology, Lodz University of Technology, Poznan University of Technology, Rzeszów University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, University of Silesia, Military University of Technology in Warsaw, Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg, and VSB – Technical University of Ostrava.

Pursuit of Statutory Objectives
The PTM statute defines the objectives and methods of operation of the Society in general, descriptive terms. During the first 10 years of PTM’s existence, the following areas of activity emerged:
- Promotional activities for materials engineering study programs, as well as for the scientific, technological, and engineering achievements of Polish research centers.
- Strengthening cooperation with industry, particularly with small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Further development of scientific and educational collaboration among national centers.
- Ensuring a high substantive level of conferences organized in Poland in the fields of materials engineering and materials science.
- Strengthening the position of journals focused on materials engineering and materials science.
- Close cooperation with FEMS.
- Intensifying integration with European science and industry, which involves uniting the efforts of universities, research institutions, and scientific organizations and societies, including PTM and the scientific committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Types of Activities in the Pursuit of Statutory Objectives
I. Organizing Seminars on “Research and Education Programs in Materials Engineering”
The main objective of these seminars, organized since 1995, was to define effective forms of cooperation and collaboration among national academic and research units specializing in materials science. The focus was on modernizing the content, methods, and systems of education, as well as on refining research topics and the criteria for selecting them. In addition, the seminars aimed to emphasize the importance of organizational matters, including the exchange of scientific information, publication and editorial activities, and maintaining a strong position for the materials science academic community within both the Polish and international systems of science and higher education.
These seminars were organized with the participation of selected Polish technical universities and AGH University of Science and Technology. Over the course of 10 years (1995–2005), 10 seminars were held.
It is worth noting that the initiative to establish PTM emerged during the seminar in Wisła (September 6–8, 1995), as a result of discussions on presentations regarding “Criteria and Conditions for Shaping Research Topics and Educational Directions in the Field of Materials Science.”
II. Organizing or Providing Patronage for Scientific Conferences and Scientific Training in the Field of Materials Engineering
III. Journals:
“Inżynieria Materiałowa” – co-editing involvement starting from issue 3, 1996 (published by NOT-SIGMA)
“Advances in Materials Science” – a journal initiated by the Pomeranian Branch of PTM
“Materiały i Technologie” – a journal under the patronage of the Pomeranian Branch Board of PTM
Collaboration with the editorial boards of the journals “Archives of Materials Science” and “FEMS News.”
IV. Membership in FEMS (The Federation of European Materials Societies)
PTM has been a member of FEMS since 21.07.1998. Since 2003, the PTM representative and a member of the Executive Committee of FEMS has been Prof. Dr. hab. Aleksandra Czyrska-Filemonowicz.
FEMS (Federation of the European Materials Societies) is a federation of 24 European materials science societies, bringing together over 26,000 members.
The mission of FEMS is to support and promote scientific, technical, educational, and outreach activities in the broadly understood field of materials engineering.
The main goals of FEMS are as follows:
- Creating a network that integrates materials science centers across Europe,
- Encouraging cooperation among engineers, scientists, and industry professionals,
- Disseminating materials science knowledge,
- Supporting personnel exchange between academic and industrial centers of materials engineering,
- Building the European Research Area (ERA).
